This time I'd like to tell you about the author. Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and one of the form's finest exponents. He also wrote under several pseudonyms such as Joseph Prunier, Guy de Valmont, and Maufrigneuse .

Maupassant is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story. He delighted in clever plotting, and served as a model for Somerset Maugham and O. Henry in this respect. His stories about expensive jewelry ("The Necklace", "La parure") are imitated with a twist by Maugham ("Mr Know-All", "A String of Beads") and Henry James ("Paste").

Taking his cue from Balzac, Maupassant wrote comfortably in both the high-Realist and fantastic modes; stories and novels such as "L'Héritage" and Bel-Ami aim to recreate Third Republic France in a realistic way, whereas many of the short stories (notably "Le Horla" and "Qui sait?") describe apparently supernatural phenomena.

The supernatural in Maupassant, however, is often implicitly a symptom of the protagonists' troubled minds; Maupassant was fascinated by the burgeoning discipline of psychiatry, and attended the public lectures of Jean-Martin Charcot between 1885 and 1886.[6] This interest is reflected in his fiction.

Maupassant is notable as the subject of one of Leo Tolstoy's essays on art: The Works of Guy de Maupassant.

ANTE ANNUM

Last year I discovered the world of Guy de Maupassant. Unfortunately, nor at school neither at the university we didn't read the works of this prominent writer. I  run mad after his novel "Bel Ami, or, The History of a Scoundrel", that's why I've decided to choose for my project his short story "The Necklace" and I'm sure it'll be great.
Here I put the link for those who would like to read the story.

P.S. For those who are interested: this is the photo of Lina Cavalieri. You can suppose that she could be a princess or a representative of some noble family, but the truth is quite different. She was an Italian operatic soprano and she is thought to be the first photo-model in the world.

    AB OVO

Hello everybody!
Finally I have got the blog. I think that nearly 10 years ago
we couldn't even imagine that we'd have an opportunity to share our thoughts and opinions on-line(we didn't even now such a word). But still...
It wasn't a challenge to create a blog, my head was busy with the thoughts how to present collected information here correctly and in a way somebody would like to read it. I would try to cope with the project in Stylistics in a good way and hope it will help me to broaden my knowledge not only in English but my computer skills as well. Good luck!
